Weird bump!

So I didn't see my mare yesterday, too icky out, but I went up to see her today and while riding my instructor pointed out a lump on her chest.
I feel so negligent for not seeing it...
Anyway, it's similar to the bumps two other horses had a few months ago.
I guess it's maybe a little bigger than a golf ball. I lunged her and rode her (all before knowing about this lump) and she was not off at all. She was actually fairly energetic from being in all day.
She'll let me touch it, but she slowly moves away, so I know she's not in too much pain. I put some of my veterinary liniment on it, and hosed it before hand.

There was no tick, and I didn't see any blood. It was fairly solid but kinda squishy
Any ideas?

Anybody think it's a bug bite?
    05-09-2012, 07:10 PM
It could be a bug bite, or, more likely a bruise, IMHO. It also looks similar to the lumps our horses developed when they came down with pigeon fever, but I think it's the wrong time of year for that.

Thank you!
If it's a bruise, would it take a week or more to heal?
Also, could a tick bite swell up like that?
She was out in the grass fields yesterday

Oh, and what's pigeon fever?

Pigeon fever is also known as dryland distemper. It looks (and acts) a lot like strangles, but the abscesses don't form in the lymph nodes of the jaw like in strangles.

In Pigeon fever, the abscesses form pretty much anywhere - on our horses it the abscesses were either on the neck or on the chest.

The treatment for both strangles and pigeon fever is pretty much the same, but they are caused by different bacteria.

I mention it being an abscess to my riding instructor, and she said that if it was one, I wouldn't be able to touch it the way it was

If it was like strangles then would she have a runny nose too?

Could also be a heamatoma (sorry not sure of the spelling).
My horse had one under her chest from getting kicked.
Felt squishy and hot.
Vet had me do hot compresses on it. Then during one of the compresses, it broke open and blood came out.
Healed just fine.

It didn't feel really hot. Seemed like the same temperature as the rest of her
Was it hard but squishy all over it?
