What age for Senior feed?

Tequila will be here today or Wednesday and I am wondering if I should give her a food for seniors? She is 20 yrs young but looks and acts much younger.

That depends on the horse. I have one that has been on senior feed since he was about 16 and probably should have been on it sooner but he only has a few teeth. I've got a mare that is almost 18 and thriving on regular feed. If the horse is doing great on what it's currently on then I'm not sure I would change it...

Ok she's doing good so I will keep her on what she's on now. Are there any supplements I should give her? She has a clean bill of health and no problems so far and I want to make sure she stays that way.

Horse journal did a study on testing senior feed, vs regular feed, the study found horses make less saliva when they age, throwing a couple cups of water on the regular food had the same effect as feeding SR feed.

I agree it depends on the horse but my friend put her horse on it and she is 16. It's alot easier to keep weight on and the horse has more energy. I think it would be fine for you to put the horse on Senior feed.

Make sure to have her teeth checked on a regular basis. Senior feed is more palatable and has more calories than regular feed. It is important to maintain her teeth so that she can properly chew the food. Bad teeth increase chance of food not digesting properly and therefore colic can happen.
