What should I feed Shocking?

I hope this is the right place to add this thread. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am almost positive that I am switching farms in April. The barn I am at feeds your horse, as the grain is included in board. Shocking is an easy keeper, and he maintains his weight.

At the new farm, you buy your own grain (I like that). I just want to know if I should fee Shocking's food.

He is on Phase 4, 1/2 a scoop, twice daily.
He has maintained his weight quite nicely, a nice coat, and healthy feet.
We are eventers, but we don't compete more then once a month during show season. I ride him 5 or 6 times a week thought. We do mostly flat but during the summer, we do alot of cross country.

Is this enough food to keep him healthy? Should I change his food or no, because he is healthy and happy?

Free choice hay and then get the all phase supplement for his nutrition 1lb a day is what it calls for I think ... 1lb here in the states is equal to about 2 3/4 measuring cups...

Peggysue, you seem to be on all the nutrition threads and I was just wondering where you've gained all of your knoweldge when it comes to feeding a horse. I also board my horse and purchase his grain as I don't like what the barn has to offer. Free choice hay is great but in a boarding environment sometimes is unrealistic.

I have three years of Equine Studies at St Mary of the Woods and countless hours of personal research trying to find the studies and information needed to save a horse I had

If free choice hay is not an option give the max amount the barn will allow :)

Ok thanks I was just wondering. Since we can't do free choice hay I get the maxhay the barn will give plus I give alfalfa cubes and purchase my own alfalfa hay to give as a suppliment. My horse eats 2x the regular horse as he is 17.1 hands and has a high metabolism. My other horse could gain weight on air, lol

Many times when you "balance" the nutrition hard keepers will become easy keepers... two years ago I would have laughed at the notion of less calories a fatter horse but I have seen it work on too many horses!! When you get thier system better balanced and working properly the results are AMAZING!!!

I agree all horses are different, but some do require more feed as others do fine on less.

The ones that need MORE you can still do cheaper with beet pulp and/or alfalfa pellets/cubes for extra calories and still keep the cool healthy energy

As I wrote above I do suppliment his feed with alfalfa cubes/pellets and alfalfa hay.

Any more ideas?

Thanks Peggysue, but I am slightly confused. Oh, and Shocking has Free Choice hay.
