What uh, what might this be? Pictures *

About six weeks back my older mare had a week long trial with choke, impaction colic and a seizure. (Thread here)

She has made it threw with flying colors and is back to her normal routine.

Due to the episode, she'd lost a little weight and muscle from all of the food we had to with hold. Would you guess that this is just spare skin? She thinks its very itchy, itches it on bushes or trys to rub her belly on the ground. It hasn't changed or otherwise bothered her but just kind of showed up after her colic/etc.

Just curious as in all of the horses we've had I've never seen this. Thought maybe someone has.

I don't know but my mare the other day had something a tad similar. It looked like fluid build up, maybe from insect bites? Never seen it before, and then it went away the next day. It was not painful though and stoday it is completly gone.

Curious what others say!

Did she have surgery for her colic? I don't see any staples but you never know. My mare had edema around her incision that looked just like that. Normal after surgery.

If she lost a lot of weight could it be like loose skin?

Looks like a hematoma? I know I havent spelled that correctly.

Mana and another horse I know had something very similar, but theirs were near their armpits. We didn't find and injury and it didn't hurt. Vet suspects insect bite. It went down slowly. Took about a week and a half.

Looks ally like what my gelding abd best friends horse gets...it's Edina from the bugs, for us it cleared up in a matter of two full days witybone time if cold hosing and, swat and lots of fly spray. Both horses MUST have a belly band with the fly sheets to help too....
Another one of my friends horses got this too and it cleared up with just a ton of fly spray!

She did not have surgery

I had thought it was from the bugs (and maybe it is..) but it came on over six weeks ago.

She has the arm pit thing going to, like grayshell posted, that has been there since winter though.

I will try to get a photo of the armpit as well. I have never seen a older horse sag but I guess that it is possible that it could just be flabby old lady skin.

This is what she thinks about having someone offer to scratch it.


I think its nearly impossible for a horse to be any more excited about having a belly scratched. It hasn't bothered her other than the itching but its just so odd.

In the first picture I see a lot of bumps on the right hand side of the loose skin.. makes me think bugs or hives (creepy crawling feeling.. urgh)

Have you tried putting some listerine on the area (carefully) to relieve the itching?
