I have a 24y/o appy mare who's getting in her winter coat nicely, but I worry about her through the winters due to her age and the fact that she is a little under weight. She's under weight due to nursin a foal, I tried everything and she's inly gaining weight now that she's not nursing. The blanket I have for her belonged to my stud, but I lost him this last spring to a lightening strike. Anyways, the blanket is a 1200D Rip-Stop medium weight blanket. Usually I wait till its below freezing during the day before I blanket. I guess I'm wondering what's every ones veiw on winter blankets.

My 19 year old hard keeper has been wearing a blanket at night since mid september. She wears her medium weight at night as long as it stays above 20 degrees. Any colder and the heavy weight goes on. Yesterday it was 42 and rainy so she kept her midweight on all day.

I start blanketing when its in the 30s at night. Especially if its raining/sleeting.
