white spot in iris of eye?

Yesterday, when my husband and I got home from work and went through the evening ritual of feeding the three musketeers, he noticed that our old gelding had a white spot on the lower iris portion of his eye. Has anyone seen this before? Should I be concerned? Do I need to call my vet to come check it out? We got home after dark tonight cause we had to visit a friend who just got discharged from the hospital today, so I couldn't tell if it was still there or not. I swear, I never saw it before and we have had him since October.

I would have a vet look at it. It could be a number of things.
