Look up summer sores and see if that might be what your mare has. My boss has two horses with similar wounds and was told they were summer sores.

It could have been an abscess. I have had horses come up with abscesses after rolling and getting barbs off of a sandbur or a quill from a cactus in their skin. Stuff like that, you wouldn't notice it during regular grooming because it broke off underneath the skin. You only really notice it when a small knot starts to come up where it's trying to fester out.

If that happened, where it's located, even if it burst, it wouldn't have drained like it needed to and would have been very prone to further infection.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

Checked out pictures of it & hrm. That's possible as well. Some of the pictures did look fairly similar to what she has.

I'm hoping once this clears up we can poke around to see if there's any additional swelling underneath in case there's something that does need to drain etc. We've already had great progress in about a week so hopefully it heals up soon.

Since she in indoors I think I would check for spiders. There are some nasty ones that can cause sores and worse, especially some of those little ones.
