Will roadwork build muscle(non ridden)

Pretty simple question I've got, if I walk/trot a horse round the roads inhand will it build muscle?

Any other non ridden work I can do to build a horses muscle up?

Thank you :)

For our non-riding halter horses, we focus on trotting and backing to build muscle.

I don't plan on riding him much because of various reason so I'm hoping to do as much as I can at the moment to build him up without being ridden.

Trot him up hills, trot along side of him, yes, it will get both of you in shape, but man oh man is that hard work!

The roads around me are quite hilly.

So should I start just walking and then build up the amount of time trotting gradually?

How many times a week and for how long?

As much as YOU can handle, I guarantee you will give out before the horse. Unless you are stronger and have more stamina than a horse? If you do, I am in awe!

^^^ Yes. Trot as much as you can stand, everyday if you can. You'll give out a long time before even an out of shape horse will.

Do interval training. Start slow. Watch the hooves on pavement. You can road founder them.
