Hi, my mare developed a Windpuff on each hind leg after a hard lesson. She's never gotten them since I've owned her and I've heard that they are completely harmless if there is no heat and lameness.
But what worries me is that, is this a sign to slow down with her? Or is she working too hard? She's supposed to be my 3ft hunter/eq horse but I am worried that it is too much for her.
My WB has windpuffs all over his legs but my vet has assured me on many occasions that they are of no consequence. Was the footing different? Harder ground could contribute. As long as you are conditioning her properly and she has the conformation for it you should be fine. I like to use BoT wraps overnight and while riding just in case, and I think they do makes them a bit smaller.
When my girl developed them I started using Professional Choice Boots while she was working, and then use Mineral Ice Mane N Tail Mineral Ice - Horse.com afterwards.
6 Months later and she has no soft ones, they have all hardened and never have given her an issue. She still wears the boots, and I still ice her......
