    I would definitely try the chiro/ vet first - if that doesn't work, the only other thing I can think of is that he is testing you a little bit...He may be getting a little cranky as he gets older, especially if he doesn't get ridden very regularly...(this is what my older gelding does, as he doesn't get ridden very often anymore.) Does he do this if you try to ask him to canter in either direction? He could be just testing you to see if he can actually get away with NOT cantering...just a thought..since he has gotten away with it several times now. He may have it in his head "if I pin my ears back, she won't make me canter..." might have to try being persistent with him even if he does pin his ears back - to see if he actually will give up and say "okay, I guess I'm not the boss" ;)
