Wormer question

I just got a new horse I have no idea when the last time this guy was wormed .I was going to use zimectrin gold on him ,then I thought someone told me once if a horse hasent been wormed in a while don't use the good stuff because it could cause some kind of problem...Anyone else ever heard anything like that? Also do you guys think its better to worm before or after they eat? Thanks DW

You're correct in your thinking.

When you don't know his deworming status, you're smarter to choose a dewormer that targets less classes of worms first, something like Strongid or Panacur. Follow up with the Gold in 2-3 weeks. If he has a large worm burden, you can cause such a huge dieoff (with the Gold) that he could colic or have explosive diarrhea.

Studies show that there is no difference in deworming on a full or empty stomach. I do it on full stomachs because they're all on pasture.

Thanks so much! I swore I heard that before but you never know.I have something less potent ill give him instead the follow with the gold in 2 or 3 weeks as you suggested .Thanks again! DW

What our vet recommends is 1/2 does of Ivermectin followed by another half does in 10 days. Then wait 30 days and give a full dose of Ivermectin. After that use whatever product/rotation is appropriate for your area.

Yes - that is what we do too.

I would also follow up with a probiotic.
