yearly vaccinations

I have not been able to find anthing on this and if it's been covered before, I hope to get fresh responses. What shots does a 14 year old trail gelding need? He isn't going to be shown, but will be around other horses who probably aren't vaccinated. I was going to get the same ones he had last year with his previous owner, but not all vets offer the same shots or combination. I had one person tell me he had been over vaccinated?! Last year he had EIA, West Nile, Fluvac 5 (Rhino, Flu, Tetnus, WEE, EEE), Rabies and a Coggins test. Should he get these again? Are there other that he missed?

I do the 4 way and will also do rabies my horses are not really around other horses so i think the 4 way is plenty. If you think he needs same shots as last year then do them other wise do what you think he needs.

The standard at my barn is strangles and a 5-way. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 5-way they use is flu, rhino, tetanus, EEE & WEE.

There isn't a vaccine for EIA. That's what the Coggins is for; to test for EIA. Which is why you want it to come back negative.

A 4 or 5-way vaccine is generally what a horse who will be leaving the property should get, including a yearly rabies vaccine. I give mine the 4-way. I don't do a strangles or botulism vaccine, because I don't think those do any real good.

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!

Thank you for the responses! Since all vets are different, they all have different combinations. Some have 5 way, some have 4 way, some have one combination or other combinations and others have just single dose. Can you please tell me the specific vaccinations when responding, I would really appreciate it! :)

My mare didn't have shots to my knowledge when I got her and yesterday the vet came out and did rabies, west Nile, and tetanus. I didn't have a coggins pulled as we aren't really planning on showing.

Here in N. Central TX, my vet recommended, Innovator 6, West Nile, and Rabies. That's what mine had.... and will have, but I do need to ask about tetanus, don't think there is one in the Innovator, think it's the "flu's & encephalitis's" I looked it up, but I've slept since then

I should mention too that the vets around here don't hav the 5 way. Coggins is recommended if you are boarding or showing and rhino is said to be given to mares only. Rabies is given if you want, but not necessary. Strangles, again to those whe are being boarded. He is by himself, currently, but last year there was a situation when I needed to move him to a different facility for a month. I would take him to his old vet, but it's afive hour drive :)

Mine get a 5way, rabies and West Nile. Only one leaves our surrounding properties (trail ride around our house) and that is to go to 4H things...
