Your thoughts on supplements for young horses?

I'm not a "hard core supplement" feeder. I won a free 25lb container of Purina Nature's Essentials Free Balance 12:12 supplement at a horse show as a door prize this summer:
Purina Horse Feeds - NATURE'S ESSENTIALS
I top dress Strategy with it for my mare, who has daily pasture turn out. She's doing great on it. I still have a ton of the supplement left. For some reason, it just lasts longer with one horse.

I have purchased a prospect colt. He won't be weaned until the end of September or the begining of October. I saw a 3lb tub of Farnam Grow Colt on clearance for $10 at a local tack store, so I scooped it up. Farnam - Your partner in horse care
Has anyone fed Grow Colt and seen any type of results? I figured $10 isn't a huge gamble if it doesn't work. I want to ensure he has everything he needs. The Purina Natural Essentials Free Balance 12:12 is labled as safe for all ages, so I might stick to that. I also do keep a salt and mineral block out for my mare and her pasture mate (who isn't my horse). I think I'm covered, but are there any supplements you'd recommend for feeding a weanling/young horse? If so, why?

Yearling
I keep getting told by my farrier to use hoof supplement, so my guess is there is something to it. However, if they are like human supplements/vitamins, too small amounts are taken.... for instance, I take 5,000iu of vitamin D per day to obtain the alleged maximum cancer fighting benefits, but most bottles say to take 400iu.
