horse related job/internship/etc. wanted

So.. around where I am, there isnt much for horse related work, so I was wondering who out there either small or big name has something for me over the summer to do. Im only a junior in hs but I want horse experience within working for someone and need money for future plans/my own horses. What is there that I can do and with who? I'm just interested in whats out there, not actually doing something at the moment (since im in school) but post away. :)

I think it depends on what discipline you are interested in.

You might want to try trainers directories of assoc. You are interested in and see if anyone needs help during the show season. Depending on the discipline you probably won't get to ride. It would be more like grooming and such, but it would be a step in the right direction.

When I'm bored, I browse through Equestrian Jobs and Staff, Horses and Horseboxes/Trailers for Sale and Equestrian Dating. They have lots of listings for all sorts of horse related jobs.

I will give a little advice from experience....
Beware of advertised horse jobs, they are usually the people who are hard to work for and have to advertise to get employees.

Good horse jobs are not advertised and usually heard through word of mouth. That is where knowing people in the area and discipline becomes important. Those jobs are coveted. Get your name out there and get to know as many people as you can.

^ Certainly do not base a decision solely off of an internet ad, in this case or even something non-horse related.

I found my current internship by searching Google for "dressage internship." I also corresponded with numerous past interns, emailed and phoned the owners, did my research, visited the farm, and did a trial period.

Don't discount a barn or trainer just because they have an online ad. Do your research. Word of mouth is not always possible depending on your location, but once you have a list, start asking around about them. There are plenty of online resources, including this forum. :)

Lucky you :)
Perhaps your right and I shouldn't lump them all into the same category. However,
People I have worked with and myself have not had a pleasant experience with advertised positions. One job I was flat out lied to about the situation. The horse world is fairly small, later I ran into a gal I went to school with at a show, who went through the same thing with the same trainer. Not the only instance...

The best jobs I have had were the ones not advertised but rather through a friend of a friend type of situation. And yes, no matter what, whether it be the internet or word of mouth, do your research.
