    He Crossed the Bridge...

My dear Reggie has spent the last week in his stall, laying in nice deep bedding. It all started a few days after I brought him home after going on a trail ride with a local barn. He stopped eating, his normally silky smooth coat started to feel very oily and he could be standing still with a thick layer of sweat on him. My vet, who specializes mostly in equines but also does small animals on the side, was totally puzzled. He told me that a lot of the symptoms would point to pancritis in a dog but horses don't get that. He set Reggie up with IVs and a paste to supplement him not eating, which was harder then worming him. As the days past weight started falling off Reggie like layers of mud, his ribs were very prominent at the end. I contacted two other vets for opinions and none of them had even the slightest clue as to what was going on. He was coughing, his breath smelled terrible (the vets all checked for signs of a bad tooth and or sinus issues), temperature spikes etc. He went down a few days after he became ill, he would get up briefly to drink some water. This morning I knew that by looking in his blind eyes that it was time to say good bye to my dear friend. I opened up the barn doors to let in the sunshine and fresh air, so that he could enjoy the smells of the outdoors. Reggie went quickly as his head rested in my lap, he was almost eleven years old. My vet wanted to do an autopsy but I shook my head, after all there was one other horse that had Reggie's symptoms in my vet's care. With the help of my neighbor I buried Reggie and marked his grave with a large rock. I am just happy he is not suffering any more.

It is never easy. Poor Reggie, he was so young. My boy was only 14. Too young to go. You did the right thing for him and I understand why you didn't want an autopsy. I didn't have one done either. The thought of it was too unsettling to me. My boy was only 14 and had a heart attack in the field one morning. No struggling just passed away. I still cry for him every day, I miss him so much. He was a wonderful boy. It is ok to cry but it is also ok to smile at some of the great memories you have of him.
