Rose is Rose

Three years ago, I bought a small filly for $40. Some people were going to shoot her because they had "left" and she was starved all winter. She was beautiful. She at first looked like a buckskin. She was only 14.2 hh. The first year was rough. We kept her at my boyfriends and she slowly recovered. Her ribs began to fill out, along with her legs, flanks, then finally her spine. So many people helped me help her. The neighboors, everyone was so nice. At first, she hated being caught, she just plain hated people, and she did have a tendency to kick.

But the last year I had her, she turned into something amazing. She became a beautiful strawberry roan. She was starting to warm up to me, and I decided it was time to break her. She would willingly let me catch her now, her big sweet eyes had a light, her ears were always forward. I bought her a new pink halter, I still keep it hanging in my room. I trailered her to the vet's one day for a coggin's test. At the gas station, everyone stared at her, asked if she was for sale, complemented on how cute she was, asked if she was going to be a barrel racer. She was my pride and enjoy.

Then, one afternoon, I was going to work her in round pen, but I decided against. I was walking to open a gate, when I felt a muzzle on my shoulder and sniff my hair. I turned around to see Rose. That was the first time she voluntarily came up to me on her own. I patted her neck and ran my hand down her body as she walked past me to the other horses. Then It Happened.

My paint gelding kicked out playfully to my appaloosa, but his two hind feet planted into Rose's side instead, stunning her. She laid down, and wouldn't get up. I screamed and ran to her, dialing the number to my house. Soon, me friend's and family were there. Rose was sweating, her face was cold. We quickly loaded her in the trailer and rushed her to the vet. We unloaded her and the vet gave her pain medicine, and she lay there on the grass, her whole body cold. He said he was sorry, she had a busted artery, from the ribs that broke. There was nothing we could do. She died there that night, I left with an empty trailer, and pink halter in my lap, which should have been on her head, and she should have been in the trailer. But she wasn't.

I lost her June 2009.

Awwww I'm so sorry! :( God Bless you for taking her in and giving her a good home. She's in heaven and will be waiting for you one day. I lost a horse last year too (he was elderly) and I know what you're going through. My prayers go out.

John 14:6 - Jesus said unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me."

What a sad story. Good for you taking her in and making her last years happy and content. She was a beautiful horse. :,,)

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/
