Beet Pulp

So we just have a bag of beet pulp sitting in the barn feed room, and although Ice is gaining some weight, I know he's not getting enough hay, but I can't pay for more, so I'm trying to do more than just up his grain. My one question is what color is it supposed to be? I was under the impression it was supposed to be a dark red/purpley color. The bag that we have is more of a dried out brown color. It DOES have molasses added, so that could be the problem, but I just want to make sure before I start feeding him something thats gone bad.

Mine usually is a browny gray and smells sweet.

You would know if it wasn't good to use as it would smell 'off'.

Yep - to me it looks a lot like cardboard shreds, but darker.

Okay! Thanks. It just took me by surprise when I opened up the bag and bleh, it all looked dead and dried out and not appetizing (versus say our sweet feed which looks delicious but smells gross, the 12% pellets that smell like peanut butter, the alfalfa cubes that smell AMAZING, one of the horses weight builder that smells like I could make coffee out of it....).

Yup, my beet pulp reminds me of nothing more than shredded cardboard - but my horses seem to like it so it's all good! I did love the smell of the old sweet feed but figured it wasn't worth the damage :]

Shredded cardboard is a great way to describe it.

I buy the beet pulp pellets and they are a gray color.

I have never seen beet pulp be a red/purple color. Were you guessing it was that color because that is color of beets at the store?

I think I've seen it somewhere reminds me more of bran thats dyed than of actual beets (maybe it wasn't beet pulp though) and it was flaky and a light maroonish color.

I could be crazy. It happens.
