Best CHEAP hay storage solution

I was wondering if you all know any cheap storage solutions to keep hay? I used to keep it on my porch under a tarp but with 4 horses now instead of 1 that is not really an option. I'd like to drive up to Production acres and buy several tons of alfalfa horse hay but I need to come up with a good cheap place to put all that hay. I'm in the deep south. No room in the "barn". I'm looking for some freestanding something ???? How do you all keep your hay?

We have a hay wagon that we use to get our hay when we need some before a delivery is scheduled. I bought it for $300 and it's held up very well. The hay stays dry with a tarp tied over it.

I would get a car port frame, something cheap, so either made of aluminum or you can go to Home Depot/Lowes and get enough plastic piping to make yourself one and use a tarps to roof it off and make three sold walls. Then you can have a fourth tarp that's rolled up that you can drop down and anchor in case of inclement weather.

Make sure to anchor the frame too (including gluing everything together), I knew one woman who used a car port from for a run in, but then a hurricane blew through and took the frame and planted it two feet into the ground in the middle of the pasture.

We used wooden pallets for underneith and a big tarp on top for years. Around here, with the super cold winters, though, we changed the tarp twice a year because the tarp would freeze to the top bales & get stuck in snow & ice & had to be cut up.
Now we bought a cheap tent garage (the ones that come with the metal frame & canvas-type sides that you set up) with pallets on the bottom. Works AWESOME!
If you check local ads you could probably find one for cheap. Or maybe advertise ;)

I've thought of a car port frame for sure, I see them advertised for 699 all the time. A tent garage is a good idea too where does one find something like that? I had a tarp over the hay on the porch and just lost a bunch of alfalfa due to the tarp blowing off and the hay getting wet Grrrrrrrrr....i guess we had more wind than I realized.

Someone said the back of a semi the box don't know what that is called or where you would find it but that sounds good if you could find it. They sell shipping containers that would be really good but everybody wants like 2000 for them. If I had that much to spend I'd build another barn LOL.

Lilruffian, do you get a HUGE tarp that totally covers the hay and just make sure it's tight? Or only cover the top and like 1/2 way down? How big a tarp does that take?

that reminds me of when we were kids and my dad built the horses a run in. Well we lived in Oklahoma and it gets pretty windy there. So a thunderstorm blows in and blows the run in completely flat the horses rush out snorting and looking crazy (and who could blame them right) so my dad goes out after the storm and resets up the run in shed, ties in in to the ground with these HUGE stakes but you know, those horses NEVER NEVER went NEAR that shed for as long as we lived there LOL They looked at it like it was alive every time they walked past and they would walk way around it.

If you Google "Garage in a Box", you will find all sorts and sizes. I got mine at Tractor Supply. WARNING! If you get one, make sure that you anchor it very well. A good gusty wind will fly it across your field like a kite. They are a real pain in the ass to put together, you will need help, but are very sturdy and hold up well.

How close to me are you? I sure wouldn't mind getting in on some alfalfa bales that don't run me $25 a bale and are crappy stem. Still gotta send you that address.

THAT SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE kind of projects I love big and backwards and frustrating and tool throwing divorce threatening home improvements LOL bring it on. Ha ha seriously i'm going to check it out :) sounds like just what we need.

Cakemom I would LOVE to be able to get some good alfalfa bales at a reasonable price if you could look at the site production acres they have some really really nice looking hay. Very reasonable prices IMO selling by the ton is the best deal around I think. It s only 8 hr drive for me and I'm about an hour and 12minuted from NOLA. Figure out how many bales you think you'd like we could come up with a percentage of gas price
And that would help everyone I think. My tb def needs the alfalfa. I'm totally into it :)
