I'm pretty sure it has to do with storage somewhere along the line with the mold. I've had moldy Nutrena feed from another store too, the third one I get it from has always fresh.
Just never had it happen with the Purina feeds. Probably because a Purina mill is only 30 miles away.

Out of curiousity, what does the bad feed look like? I always dump my bags of feed into a 50 lb container so I can sift through it and seal it up better, and I haven't yet noticed anything weird about the Nutrena feeds, but if they are bad do they smell funny? Is it fuzzy? Just discolored? Clumpy? I'd hate to accidently feed my girls bad feed and not even realize it O_o

You'll see mold. Grayish blue- green color, the typical mold smell, pellets sticking together. I had one which had a real puzzle of mold, had dumped it in the bin, in the garage, not really well lit. I portioned it and when I went to ad water I saw a " salt&pepper" pattern.
Another was moldy only on the side touching the bag, another the whole top layer was whitish gray with mold.

Ick. Well I'm glad its obvious. I'll definitely make sure I'm always dumping feed into my containers before feeding any at all though, no matter what. I'd hate to not notice there was mold at the bottom or something until I'd used part of the bag already! O_o

I do just that, trust me lol. With ALL feedstuff. And TSC also " taught" met to check expiration dates.

Before I switched to triple crowns 30% (can get it at a slightly closer store) I bought purina enrich 32 at tractor supply. Its just a ration balancer, only had to feed about 1 lb a day so the bag lasts FOREVER and my horse did amazing on it. He was on free choice hay too, so I used the enrich 32 to give him all the vitamins and minerals it was missing. You should look into it though, it really is great for them and not loaded with sugars they don't need.

Well, my daughter and I bought our Nutrena Safe Choice from 2 different TSC, many miles apart. We both contacted Nutrena first who sent the coupons, they also advised us to take our receipt, along with an empty bag, and a sample of the mold, and insist on a replacement bag. TSC was very nice at both stores. This happened to us several times, so we got tired of it and switched to Strategy.

This seems to happen all over the country at TSC's......somebody " up there" should look into this, both, TSC and Nutrena.......
