For eye irritations:boric acid weakly diluted as an eye wash,have used on myself,equines & cats over the years & works great!
For treating proud flesh: meat tenderizer {told to me by my vet}
You have to be extremely careful treating proudflesh with meat tenderizer as it can eat away at the healthy tissue.
Agree you have to be careful using it. I only tried it once years ago & it did work, but there is better stuff out there these days for treating wounds. Just thought I'd throw it out there as the OP asked for homemade remedies from the cupboard & that is one I new of
Thought of another! Yogurt{old fashion kind with natural cultures} for your foal with diarrhea
This is all very useful! Thankyou! Never heard of the meat tenderizer, probably wouldn't try it, but it does make sense.....it eats away at the protein fibers in a steak to soften it up, so I guess it would eat away at proud flesh too
Listerine (the plain one) and baby oil mixed together, spray on tail base for itchy tail. This is assuming the horse is not rubbing due to worms. I used all the time to keep my horses tail nice and healthy for shows.
Instead of buying expensive electrolytes, mix one box of baking soda and one box of iodized salt together.
Don't waste money on Sand Clear, buy generic powdered Metamucil (I buy the Equate brand). It has the same active ingredient as the more expensive 'equine products', which is psyllium fiber. My horses love the orange flavored kind.
For thrush and other fungal infections, I mix 16 ounces of water with 4 ounces of bleach, and 4 ounces of generic gold Listerine. Works like a charm.
Disposable diapers and duct tape have a ton of uses, especially for wound care.
Ethnic hair care products can take the place of Show Sheen.
Mineral oil can be brushed on hooves instead of buying expensive hoof dressing.
