Cracked Lupins?

My mum tends to want me to try everything she hears from people when they give us advice about horses. Sometimes she also doesn't believe a thing I say and completely trusts what they say just because they are an adult.

Anyway someone was telling us about lupins being really good to feed and being cheaper then a lot of other stuff. My mum bought some this afternoon and wants me to try it. I'm not saying this is bad but I really don't know much about it. We have cracked lupins. I have been trying to find information on the internet with limited success.

I am not totally sure how to feed it to them. I was going to slowly add small amounts to their normal feeds. I have been told you don't have to soak cracked lupins only whole lupins because of a toxin or something. How long should they be soaked for exactly? I was going to soak the cracked stuff anyway before feeding it especially for Pepper because I think it would be too difficult for her to eat because it is so hard.

Also how much should they get eventually? I honestly have no idea about this. And what nutritional value does it have exactly? Thanks for any help.

Lupins are a great, high protein feed. They generally aren't likely to make horses too fizzy either.

I feed my horses flaked lupins and they have made a big difference to their weight and overall condition. I soak mine for about 10 minutes prior to feeding (mostly just because they get Hygain Micrbeet too and that needs to be soaked for 10 minutes). You are right in that cracked/flaked/crushed lupins are safe to feed dry. Although, there has been stories of some horses having an issue with choke if they are fed dry. Whole lupins must ALWAYS be soaked before feeding, generally I believe 24 hours is the rule.

How much to feed is really dependant on what else you are feeding. My guys get between 250-600gm per day (easy keepers get less than the hard keepers), however they are also being fed an array of other things too.
