Equine Iron Supplement...

I'm currently taking Human Physiology in college and this thought occurred to me last night while I was lying in bed.

Increased iron in the body leads to increased oxygen levels in the body. There are athletes that use "doping" as a method for their muscles to not fatigue as quickly allowing them to place better in their races.

Some people down the road from me feed their horses Red Cell and I'm curious if the results are similar to "doping" in the human world resulting in a horse that will run faster due to the increased oxygen?

Red Cell is used for horses that show or compete but lack stamina. Its a blood builder. I would use it only if my horses were competeing heavily and seem to lack the stamina neeed to do so. Giving horses Red Cell and not useing the horses in such a case only causes more harm then good.

I've only ever given Red Cell once because I had an anemic mare. It seemed to do the trick for her. The people down the road do compete but only April - October.

I will be competing heavily this summer and am curious if maybe I should add Red Cell to my mare's diet while I'm conditioning her for the next month or give it to her throughout the show season?
