Feeding corn stalks

I have a question. I know someone who has her horse on free feed of a corn stalk bale than she only feeds maybe 2 slabs of straight grass hay and 3 cups of a sweet feed. Her horse needs another 200 to 300 pounds on it. What is the nutritional value of a corn stalk to a horse as I don't feed it to my horses. Wouldn't it be a better idea of free feed hay bale instead and a high protein ration instead of the sweet feed that has 10 percent? Just curious on what people thought or ideas are.

As far as I know, corn and corn stalks have zero nutritional value. Also, sweet feed is like feeding your horse straight-up candy.

Good quality grass hay or alfalfa and a ration balancer are MUCH preferable. Free choice hay or pasture is best, supplemented with a ration balancer and hay twice per day.

Sounds like your friend is "feeding" her horse the absolute cheapest way she can...and her horse is suffering for it.
