We put our round bales on pallets to keep them off the ground and use a hay ring... and have very little waste.

When we have round bales we ration...otherwise they waste and what would have been about two weeks worth of food, turns into three or four days of food with a hay big mess. Even when put up properly you can still get a wet spot..it happens.

The only time A bale would be put in for free choice is when we had to leave for a few days, it does make caring for them easier for who ever you suckered into doing it:)

I must have pigs too.. We have 6 horses and a pony on free grazing and two free choice round bales right now, in hay rings of course.. They'll not waste a morsel with the hay ring around the bale..

I don't see any waste at all with our two - they are too worried about food to let any go to waste, lol.

We just throw out a round bale to them, there are 4 of them. They don't waste it. I like the round bales in the winter, a lot cheaper and keeps them munching all the time to stay warm! :)

LOL Hey now! He is just generously proportioned! A tad fluffy.. We just put the round bales out last week, he definitely didn't need it before then though. He stayed fat on just grazing and a mineral block this summer..
