Hay Pellets?

So I'm still playing around with Henny's feed. Currently he's getting 3 pounds a day of Purina Enrich 32 as well as 20-25 pounds of coastal hay a day. I was looking into adding alfalfa pellets to his feed? I know it's a good source of protein and such. I want to make sure he has everything he needs to grow properly. Any ideas/tips? Or is what he's getting right now fine?

Love alfalfa. I would go with the pellets versus cubes. The pellets you just add water to them so they soften where as with the cubes you have to soak then break apart, its icky. 1lb pellets = 1lb hay

Oh, okay. I knew the pellets were better than the cubes for that very reason. His poop is kinda green. It looks brown until it's in the light, then it has a greenish tint to it. Someone said that's a sign of him getting too much rich grass? All he's getting is coastal hay and 20-25 minutes outside on average each day. I'd love to let him out longer but I can't until he's gelded.

Lol highly doubt that green poo means to much grass. My girl hasn't gotten grass since I got her and it's always greenish.

If you can get good quality alfalfa hay that would be better, although I am not sure about for babies. Hay is cheaper per pound. I expect to pay around 7-8$ per bale of really good quality alfalfa hay.

Okay just making sure haha. Around here a bale is about $14-15. We're still recovering from the terrible drought last summer but hay prices are pretty cheap now. I'll definitely be looking into the pellets vs. hay as I have to go to the feed store tomorrow anyways!

Well I'm paying $15 per 50lb bag of pellets here. So if it is any more expensive down there the hay would still be cheaper plus good quality hay is better than the pellets.

That's true. I can cut some in with his coastal hay. Do you know about how much he should get a day? He's somewhere near the 500 pound range, he was 445 last month when he had his accident and he's put on a good bit of weight since then.

If you're guy's getting hay and a ration balancer, he should be getting everything he needs unless he's a really tough keeper or having other health issues. Most horses love alfalfa, but it's not necessary if the coastal you have is good- most coastal has plenty enough protein for adult horses unless they're in extreme work or other unusual circumstances.

He's pretty dang healthy, and a fluffy little guy. He lost weight from weaning, then as he was gaining back he lost weight from his accident last month. But the ration balancer is doing good things for him right now. He's pretty much where I want him to be at this point, I just want to make sure that he is indeed getting everything he needs to grow properly.

I have no idea how much the young ones should get. Hopefully someone else here will know that. I plan on giving my girl 5-10lbs per day once I finally get hay and she tapes at 850.
