Horse refuses to eat hay

Ok thanks! I usually wait til she is out in the pasture an put her grain down but today I went to water her, I was about 4 feet behind her and she started backing up and shoved me into the corner and started attempting to kick me. This is the first time she has gotten like that AFTER she gets the grain.

Even if I refuse to give her food she starts pawing and shoving the door with her nose and once when she tried to attack me I smacked her and she reared up and hit her head on the roof and that scared me really bad.

Also about the time she stopped eating her hay I had opened the gate in her pen so that she could have more room its about an acre but its eaten down pretty well.

You don't say how old she is, but at different stages up until 4 1/2 years (I think) they are losing and growing in new teeth. Even if she was checked in October, if she's that young she could have a new problem that's developed since then. Most horses shed the baby teeth and get the new ones just fine, but sometimes they have trouble with a baby tooth coming out or a new one coming in impacted (which is like human's impacted wisdom teeth). Either of those would make it very difficult for her to eat hay, and would make her anxious and irritable from pain.

Ah, then unless she's cracked a tooth or developed an abscess or something else unusual since October, it's likely not an issue of routine dental wear. Particularly if she's mainly been eating soft stuff, she's not wearing down her teeth. Good luck with the puzzle! I agree with others that if she won't eat any hay (e.g. Changing to a different type of hay doesn't work) that you need to get the vet involved. She would be on a slippery slope.....

What kind of grain are you feeding her? Oats, barley, some sort of prepared feed (and if so, what does it contain)?

Yeah, there are some definite behaviour issues there, but I would be more concerned about getting a vet out, as others have suggested. If she's not eating any more forage, she could be in for some health problems. Colic, twisted gut. Not to mention whatever has caused her to go off her hay.

Ya... ill call tomorrow. She does eat hay if I do not provide grain. If the vet can't find anything wrong again then im going to stop giving grain and see what happens.

She is getting 3 lbs of senior feed 2x daily. I also give her a fat suppliment.

Yes, but what is in senior feed, exactly? Is it corn, oats, etc.?

It's probably pelleted so you can't see what's in it.
