I have been trying to put weight on my 4 year old TB filly. She is outside about 23 hours a day, with free choice hay in round bale form. The hour she is inside is when she is eating her grain...right now she gets grain once a day, and I'm not sure what it weighs, but it fills about two-thirds of a five-gallon bucket. It is a mix of soaked beet pulp, 14% horse feed (mixture of molasses, pellets, oats, corn, etc.), and right now I add about 5 alfalfa cubes.
I'm going to weigh her grain today so I have some idea of how much she's getting...but what I'm wondering is how much alfalfa I can add. 5 cubes isn't very much, but my filly won't eat them unless you break/rip them into little particles, even if you soak them... breaking them is very time-consuming, which is why I haven't added more yet... But I was wondering how many you need to add in order for it to really make a difference and help her gain weight. Just give me an idea of how many you feed, if you do, so I have some idea.
