    Question Introducing New Things (food)??

    Hello there!

My mare recently had a mild, mild case of gassy colic and some traces of sand as well. She is much better, thank God, but I want to be better safe than sorry and start feeding her psyllium.
Since her recent occurrence with (mild) colic should I just feed her the 5 oz., for a week regimen right off the bat? Would the small amounts not affect her at all (stir up the colic)? She isn`t fed grain due to the fact that she does well without it.

Alsoooo, I want to switch her straight alfalfa (which I heard is not recommended) to a grass/alfalfa mix. Do I feed that gradually or since it already has alfalfa can I just feed it "cold turkey"? <-- haha my new favorite term

    Much appreciated!

I wouldn't switch any food cold turkey, especially in a horse that just coliced. I don't think adding psyllium in should cause a problem but check with your Vet. A phone call to the Vet is free and WAY better than causing a problem that then needs a visit from the Vet.

She may not want to eat the psyllium plain.... my horse HATED it. I mixed it with soaked beet pulp and grain when the Vet wanted me to do a 30day stint of it but my horse was underweight and already getting grain at the time. You can ask your Vet what you can mix it with that would be safe for her (I remember my Vet said no grain for a while the last time my horse coliced).
