Its so hot my horse is sweating

Its over 100 degrees already in Southern Maryland and my horse is a 9 yr old TB Grey. He is sweating horribly. I just got him 3 weeks ago from a farm in Baltimore so the weather isnt really that much of a change. We have a lot of shade for him and the barn he is at puts him in during the day with fans. They called me yesterday to tell me he was sweating and filthy dirty and not to be alarmed when I came over to see him that evening. Is this normal??? The flies are horrible in our area and I spray him every morning and night.

My horses sweat out in the pasture all the time. I live in Georgia. As long as your horse is drinking plenty of water I wouldn't be worried. If he's not drinking a lot you might give him electrolytes on really hot days or days he's going to be worked hard.

Mine sweats every sumner and I'm in sw ohio. Keep an eye on water intake and he'll be fine.

^^Exactly. It is pretty common for a horse to begin sweating when they are just standing around in very hot or humid weather. So long as he has shade and air flow and he's drinking enough water, he'll be fine.

I'm in Alabama, and our horses sweat like crazy. Just give him access to shade, water, and a salt/mineral block.

I'm in south central Virginia and we're having a bad heat wave, too.

My TB is sweating like crazy, even standing still. The two Arabians don't seem to be affected as much.

As long as your horse is drinking plenty of water and has a mineral block available, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've been hosing all three of mine off at night, and JJ (the TB) seems to enjoy it the most.

They all get liberally fly sprayed and their fly masks put on in the morning before I leave for work.

Sweating is good - not sweating would be bad!

I'm in Georgia too. *highfive* South Georgia, as a matter of fact. It's hot as an oven plus 120% humidity!

I would only worry if your horses WEREN'T sweating. Sweating is good. If you're worried they aren't getting enough water, do a pinch test. Pinch the skin on their necks. If it doesn't go down in less then a second, they are dehydrated. If it takes two seconds for the skin to sink back into it's place, mildly dehydrated. Any more and I would be concerned.

Both my horses have been sweating for weeks....since they do not have shade in their dry lot, and will NOT use the shade trees in their pasture for some strange reason I cannot understand, they come in from 11 am to 5 pm. Our barn owner just bought them a huge industrial/barn fan that sounds like a helicopter. Lol Both ends of the stable have doors that are the size of a wall and we open them both so each end of the barn is completely open, crank up the barn fan/helicopter.....and they chill for the afternoon, licking their salt licks like popsicles.
