Liquid coming out of horse's butt

Ok I don't know alot about horses i'll try to make this short. Found a neglected horse four years ago,i took care of him for the four years when ower turned water off I called the spca. They told him I was the one who called them, so the ower said I can't take care of the horse any more . After eight months horse lost so much weight call spca again and still they won't help this horse. Well I steped in again four days ago. Since I started feeding him two times a day plus he is eating the straw from his bedding. Well now tonight I saw his tail up alot but not pooing, I looked and brown liquid is running down his butt. I muck his barn and his poo looks nice and firm. Can this be because now he is getting a lot of food, or can it be because of him eating straw? He is a old man I had a ferier out to see him four years ago he said his teeth were so bad he thinks her was 21,that would make him 25 now. Please help me help this sweet boy. I even ordered a winter blanket for him he is so thin he won't make the winter.I tried to keep this shortThank you

Does he let out gas/fart when he lifts his tail. My gelding does that alot, but no liquid. Is it alot of liquid, or dribbles ?

It's iffy caring for a horse that is not yours, and you shouldn't really do it.

However, as you already are - I'd worm the horse.

Like you said he is eating a lot more right now and if you are going to introduce more to get the weight on, then contact a vet or an equine nutritionist to make sure you do it right. Start slowly, not too much at once. What are you feeding him twice a day? He needs some good free choice hay to start with.

I don't know where you live, but AC does not tell people who called them even if the person asks. Most likely he figured it out on his own, since you're the most obvious.

Has the horse been abandoned? If not, you could be in serious trouble for trespassing, especially since the owner told you to stay away. If you've taken the horse home with his blessing, that's another thing entirely.

If you don't know anything about the horse's history or possible medical conditions, your very first call should have been to a vet. This horse's physical and possible metabolic issues needed to be determined prior to you putting him on a feeding regimen. The anal leakage could be happening because the food you've been giving him is too rich or the wrong type.

Not only does this horse need medical attention to determine the best feeding regimen, he also needs his feet done, sheath cleaned, and teeth floated. Plus, he'll need to have his feet done every 6 to 8 weeks, and yearly floating and sheath cleaning.

I wish you luck, but please call a vet and have a complete physical done on the old guy.

Thanks for the lecture everyone I will answer all your questions.Yes the horse is abandoned the ower lives across state line. Peopletell me he comes once a week the horse is free range,but there is never anything to grazy on it's all weeds. The ower does know I have been there, he called me asked me if I picked up the straw,I told him nicely that he is so thin and he won't make the winter,and told him I picked up 100lbs of steam oats and hay. As far as not knowing the horse's health back I told you neglected all his animals are, caged up dogs living in their own poo never letting them out to run never got love,I took care of them as well I was told they died. Question I asked th SPCA how close to death does he have to be before someone will help him. And yes the spca did give him my name. Wow I guess this is not a site I looking for thank you everyone

Animal control officers are just human and they sometimes do tell. I once reported some horses to the state department of agriculture. They confiscated the horses and they guy driving the truck told the horse owner that I told on them. She called and threatened me. She drove out to my place and stared at me. Then she lost interest and went on to other things in her life.

I can't believe that she left dogs unattended until they died without sparking local outrage. I could skip animal control and call the local TV news station. They could do a special report on her. I believe that the news media is an under utilized animal welfare resource.

Doreen, first welcome to the forum. I don't think anyone was lecturing just trying to help. The care of horses can be really tricky as they have a very sensitive digestive system to begin with. Then there are a host of medical issues that can complicate and/or limit what they may or may not eat, things such as allergies or insulin resistance (like diabetes in humans) that create special dietary needs. It is very easy to give something that may be okay under normal circumstances but could be very dangerous with others. They are very fickle beasts. Sadly in today's day & age with the litigious nature of many it can be a huge liability to take care of him not knowing his particular medical history as sad as that may be.

I commend you for trying to do the right thing. Have you approached the owner and asked if you could care for the horse in his absence? Approach it as a "I know that it is hard for you to be here to care for him since you live out of state, I would like to help out if I can." kind of thing maybe? If that isn't an option and If the spca won't step in, call local media & maybe the local vet. I know that my vet has on a couple occasions made the call to authorities when they wouldn't do anything about complaints from every day folks (me) and with her pushing the issue they did then step in.

One other thing. If the AC told them who called, I might get in touch with that persons boss and speak directly to them. I would say "I am trying to help an animal that is in danger right now and your officer, told the person involved who I am." I might ask if that was a standard practice and then ask, what can be done to help this horse? If you can, video would be good and a documentation of the times, dates of when you were therr and what you did. What you saw when you got there, Ie. No food, no water, skinny horse. How often the owner shows up etc... The more info you can give and proof of it, the better.
