Purina Animax is a quality feed for senior horses so if you feed according to instructions should do well for him and have everything he needs in it. You can add the oats to it but when you've finished them if you need to add something else for weight gain then soaked sugar beet would be better - But discuss all of this with the vet as he will be able to see the horse and we can't do that
I still think that the owner should sign the horse over to you as right now the guy is taking advantage of your good nature
Maybe the vet could talk to SPCA
