Lupines for horses?

I have just seen that some horses are fed lupines. Is this a European/New Zealand thing? Are they talking about the same lupines we have here in Maine, tall, pretty flowers? What are they good for and what kind of horse would benefit from lupines?

The Lupines that grow in CA are toxic. But the plant family for lupines etc are big and it really depends on a lot of things.

I'm only on a tablet so searching stuff is hard, but some plant called "lupine" is fed, seemingly mostly in Australia. I am going to assume that it is a different plant than our North American lupines...

Which are quite beautiful.
And which grow like weeds.
And which grow like crazy right next to Ahab's paddock.... I may have to do something about this...

No, "Lupins" are fed to horses somewhere; We in North America have "Lupines".

Hadn't heard of those before, seems like they're most common in Australia

OK, just read this thread, so maybe different names in different areas, but I was going to say here in Oz, lupins are a legume often fed to horses, but lupinEs wouldn't be good for horses, because they're herbivores, not wolf-eaters!
