Muscle Building Supplements??

My horse has been declared lame for about 4 weeks now, almost five. He has awesome muscle definition when he is fit but since I haven't been able to work him or ride him at all, and am starting to up his feed for the coming winter he has lost a lot of it. In about a week the farrier is coming out and he will be the deciding factor on if Copper is sound again. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion of muscle building supplements. Are they actually healthy to give a horse... or do they build muscle back in an unhealthy way? Just don't want to overload him with supplements for everything. He in already on two, one for hooves and one for joints.

Any thoughts?

My horse was off work a few years ago for about a month due to Lyme disease. I put him on SE-Mag which is a Selenium/Magnesium supplement. I forget what my logic was, but he put his muscle back on very quickly. I think any protein/amino acid supplement will help build muscle.
