Pastures in Southern California

I need to overseed my irrigated pasture. I was thinking of a beardless barley . Has anyone had problems with 'barley' grass? Does it grow well?
I have researched some sites, but most of the topics are for states other than California. My horses don't care for the orchardgrass, and with clay soil the rye does not do well. The tall fescue seems to be okay as well as the pasto rico bermuda blend, but that goes dormant in winter.
With the current hay prices, and feeding 18 head, I was looking for some
Other grass to over seed the fescue pasture ( endo free) that would carry the pastures through winter and also help so I don't need to feed as much hay. Thanks for any ideals or advice.

First, my thought would be to call your Ag, Co-op, or closest University Center that has an agriculture department.

Second, I sure hope you're not in the part of Kern County that's on fire and has even been on my local news

I lived in Riverside county for five years and fires were my worst nightmare. My truck was always aimed at the gates on the alley and the trailer was never un-hooked.

Thanks. We are safe the fires were about 3-5 miles from me. The ag extension recommends the grasses that I have not had luck with .. go figure..
I had read that barley grass was a great feed, but wondered about the growing as pasture. Ag extension has no info on it as pasture .. just as a grain product.
