Rice bran oil

Okay, so I purchased a gallon of rice bran oil the other day. My instructor had recommended Evolution Elite, as apparently it contains both rice bran and beet pulp and her TB gelding does very well on it. I'm thinking we're going to try it out, as there's a place just down the street that sells it so it's readily available.

However, I want to somehow get rice bran oil into her diet.. just to encourage weight gain without overloading her with grain, due to her tendency for ulcers.

I've read that usually 1 cup is plenty, and I'd probably just do 1/2cup with each meal (breakfast/supper). We're also ordering some Recovery EQ so that'll be added into her breakfast. I'm thinking that we'll also get a vitamin/mineral supplement.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any particular ways of feeding rice bran oil and how much they usually feed, if any?

1/2 cup is pretty drastic. You should only need about 1/4 cup a day I would guess. Read the directions on the bottle. Remember to start slow it will make the poop runny.

I would mix flax seed oil in Lizzy's nightly grain. I just poured it over the top and I had a stir stick I used to mix everything up. She also eats anything I give to her so that was never an issue.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to be adding it in gradually. I'll have to figure out what amount (in cups) four fluid ounces is, as that's what the label had recommended for slight weight gain (it was double that for significant.. but that's definitely not needed). I'm going to see if the seller can bring up a few days worth of her current feed as well, so that she can be gradually switched over.

I'm sure my instructor will help me out with it, but I don't want her telling me that it's not "necessary". It might not be, but I want her to have a nice diet at the very least. I read that the rice bran oil helps with anti-inflammatory too so that's a very good bonus for her.

4oz is 1/2 cup. But that is alot of oil. I was giving Lizzy a 1/2 cup of flax oil and that was plenty. I would start out with half that and see how that goes. And Lizzy needed a lot of weight, the oil put it on quite fast, a little faster than I would have liked.

Okay, I'll start out with a 1/4 cup first, thanks! :)
