    Supplement Help

Just sticking some feelers out to see what everyone has opinions on supplements wise. Obviously it's better to stick with the "less is more," but can't hurt to ask while I'm switching stuff around on Smartpak.

My one mare is coming off her weight supplements, she's looking MUCH better, so that frees up a little extra cash to put my other mare Cally on another IF she seriously needs it or if I decide to swap one thing for another. Right now Cally gets:

1 Smartpak Well (.5oz) of Vetri Ha (Vetri HA - Equine Joint Supplements from SmartPak Equine)
    6oz of Flaxseed
1/2 cup Veggie Oil -> Which is getting switched to Max E Glo Rice Bran

I've recently taken her off Devil's Claw + Yucca and Raspberry Leaves. I'm more worried about replacing the Devil's Claw + Yucca than the rasp leaves. This mare has never taken a lame step with me, does get a little stiff, but is never off due to her arthritis or issues. She does require coffin bone + hock injections (once a year). I'm looking more towards something that will help maintain her so she can stay sound for as long as possible. I've been debating the Smartpak Senior Herb Free. Basically just looking for suggestions or what people have tried. I would like to keep the Vetri HA + do something else, unless of course it's TOO much with both.

I agree with the less is more approach. My horse gets a good quality ration balancer which covers his needs nutritionally with the exception of a couple things. So in addition to that he gets-
    • Vitamin E + Selenium (our hay is extremely low in selenium)
    • MSM (more as a preventive than anything else, he doesn't have any problems yet)
    • Flaxseed (he doesn't get much pasture to speak of, so he gets this for the omega-3)

I'll sometimes give plain salt or an electrolyte mix since my horse doesn't lick salt blocks very well, and trying to put loose salt in his stall just resulted in a it getting filled with shavings (even though it was several feet up...)

I should probably get the hay tested to see what it lacks, but the BM is so unreliable about where she gets hay from :/ Although I suppose it should all test the same from the same area right? She is getting fed Complete Horse Feed. Not sure if that helps or not.

I think I might do the SmartFlex Senior + Vetri HA. I'd like to keep her something with higher HA, but the SmartFlex only offers 75mg compared to the 100mg in Vetri HA. It seems to be safe doing both since Grand H.A. Offers 300mg >.> The SmartFlex definitely seems to be a bit "all around" as well. I shall give it a try and see what happens.

    Hi SketchyHorse!

My horse at the recommendation of our vet (in Wisconsin) had been on Cosequin ASU for years due to both hock and coffin bone issues. For a period last year, I took that out of his supplement routine and a follow-up visit from a different vet had them commenting to me to get him back on it. Within a relatively short window after getting back to our maintenance dose, we saw a difference.

I know that Cosequin ASU PLUS has the same level of HA in it that the product you are using. If you like the people at SmartPak, why not ask their feedback on what to use to bump that up.

We also supplement with Farrier's Formula 2X. Because we feed so little grain/feed (our boy is an EASY keeper) and use Coastal hay, we added GroStrong Minerals as free choice to get his mineral/vitamin levels a boost.
