Ok so I have an 8 yo buckskin quarter horse gelding named Bono. He has chronic stomach ulcers despite multiple treatments (they flare up at shows or change in weather) because he's a stress puppy. With the advice of our vet we stopped feeding him grain. He currently eats 2 flakes alfalfa and 3 flakes coastal twice a day. My problem is, is despite a weight supplement he's dropped 200 pounds (I've also started riding twice as much). We've tried upping his hay, but he just wastes it or shoves it through the stall to my mare(lol).
So I'm wondering what suggestions for a "grain-free" feed would you recommend?
We are a true all-around horse. He is currently in hunter and western pleasure training being ridden 3-5 times a week for 1-3 hrs depending on the lesson and how fast we learn etc. He is also turned out daily for 5-6 hrs a day weather permitting with fresh grass. He doesn't get hot with extra-calories or a high energy food, in fact he's less grumpy with the extra "kick".
I just need something to help maintain him where he's at. Any advice would be great. :]
