Hi,

I just bought a bag of the Purina Equalizer and im not quite sure of the amount to give per day... Right now im giving 1 cup a day

How much should i give for a 960-1000 lbs pleasure horse that is exercised (light) about 3-4 days/week ?

It can be easy, WIEGH it the figure out how much weighs x amount. We marked it with magic marker on an old measuring cup.

Volume isn't as important as mass, hence weight.

It took me a bit to wrap my head around it at first, but now it's easy as ever.

I used Equilizer for years but I don't remember the precise volume. I had to weight it, then drew a marker line on the feeding cup.

One cup SURE isn't enough if it's the only supplement you give. I think I was giving more like 3-4 cups a day. Equilizer isn't very concentrated, so you have to give enough to meet the minimal vitamins/minerals needs.
You may call the Purina nutritionist in your region; your Purina dealer should have his/her name. They will be eager to help you balance your horse's ration depending on body score, age, activity and... hay analysis.

For reference, 4 cups of the brand of whole oats I have only weighs in at about 1lb, or about 0.45kg, so it comes out to 1 cup oats is 0.25lbs. The beet pulp pellets I have, on the other hand, come in at 2lbs in 3 cups, so 1 cup is 0.6lbs, or more than twice the weight of the oats. So, in this case, one cup of one and one cup of the other weigh vastly different amounts. And then, to add to it, if I pack the oats, I can make a cup even weigh a different amount from what I have above. But no matter what, the weight is the weight, and in a certain weight of food, there will be a certain amount of nutrients, which is what I need to make sure my horse has. :)

One day I just sat down with a scale and weighed all the things I feed my horse, so that I know what so many cups of each weigh so I can make sure he's getting the right amount. It was actually kind of fun for me. But I might just be weird.

3-4 cups of Strategy a day would only come out to just over a pound if I remember correctly, and assuming equalizer is a similar density, that would be about right for most ration balancers.

What you feed all depends on your horse. For a healthy horse that is an easy keeper or not working much, all you should need is decent pasture or hay, access to salt, and a ration balancer as a low calorie way to cover any vitamins or minerals lacking in the grass or hay.

If a horse is a hard keeper, or doing enough work that they can't keep weight on with the above, even when getting free-choice hay or pasture, you need to add in calories too. A food like Strategy has the vitamins and minerals as well as more calories, so if it's fed in high enough amounts (ie, according to the label) all you should need is grass/hay and the Strategy. Or you can just add calories to the 'easy keeper' plan in the first paragraph in the form of cool calories/other fat supplement, beet pulp, grains (corn, oats, COB), etc and keep the ration balancer in there as your source of vitamins and minerals.

If a horse STILL can't keep weight on, or has medical issues, things can go all sorts of weird though, depending on the individual animal. If you tell us about the horse your trying to feed, some excellent people here may be able to give you more specific advice.

I'd say i have more of an easy-keeper horse i have no trouble keeping her weight in fact she needs to lose some she does have lack of muscle on her topline though. So i think Equalizer will be the only thing she should get and will add powder salt on top of that because right now where i board there's no salt block and she needs salt in her diet

If she is stalled at night get a salt block and holder for her stall.
If she's out...it only costs a few bucks for a 50 lb salt lick. All the horses will be better for it.

The purina rep may very well know how much a measuring cup weighs. I have a chart giving weights and measures on most of the Poulin feeds. I had to ask for it.

she's out all the time but i am boarding her, usually there's a salt block but they've changed the horses to another pasture so they can graze grass and now there's none. I feel its very important for her to have the salt because i've read that it's very important to them.

Im also scared to give too much of the equalizer because the last thing i want is for her to get fat, she's already a little bit chubby than she should be and im going back to school in september so i will have less time to ride and work with her :(
