When I first got him, He was underweight and depressed (or that's how I felt) He's head would always be close to the ground and he just seemed to look so sad.
Anyway, His story! Dan was born in Manitoba and used to be a race horse in his younger days but apparently from what I heard he became scared of the starting gate soo... Not good for a race horse huh? He was bought by a stable in Edmonton Alberta and was trained in English and Western.
A young lady bought him. Her and her boyfriend moved up to Whitehorse, Yukon (where I live) And kept him stabled at the Riding Arena. From a mutual friend I found out Dan spooked once on the trail and she fell off. She got scared and didn't ride him again afterwards. This girl apparently met another man online, she packed up her things left her current BF and Dan behind to move to the States and marry this online guy.
BF was stuck with Dan and knew nothing about horses, so all he did was pay Dan's board for two years where he was kept in a small paddock. He was never rode, and was lucky to have someone walk him around outside his paddock.
Then poor Dan ended up being boarded else where (not sure why he was moved from the Arena) and got thrown in with a huge herd of horses. Dan had forgotten what it was like to be with other horses. He was picked on and chased around, and was getting beaten up all the time.
The stress of being in this herd and moving around lots made him lose weight. Then my farrier's sister purchased Dan and moved him into a herd of ponies. Things were good for him there, a lead mare that was fair but knew how to put the boots to them when they acted up. Then this lead mare was taken way and Dan and the ponies were distraught? That their leader had left! Dan tried to step up as lead horse, and the stress of keeping his herd safe was getting to him, there was another herd of horses on the other side on the fence and Dan figured he had to keep his herd safe from them.
So, there's an Ad for Dan at my local Horse feed/tack store. It caught my eye but I wasn't really looking for a new horse But something about him.. I just had to go see him.
We go out to see him,(we as in my mom, nieces and myself) The kids of course loved him.. I mean.. a 16HH TB gelding? Who wouldn't love a big puppy dog eyed horse? He was very friendly first one to come see us in the pasture. So, The owner and I talked, since she was my farrier's sister and a well known horse trainer here, I knew she wasn't trying to just sell him off. She got hired on to work with some horses in China on a movie set so that was the only reason she was selling him since she would be gone for 8-9 months. We arranged for Dan to come to my place for the weekend so I try him out and see how things would work.
He was amazing! I mean he's TALL .. so I had to use a mounting block LOL Anyways.. that's it for now.. All it took was that one weekend and I ended up with a new horse.
He's on a special diet to get his weight back up and he's gained most of it back. His hips are no longer hollow looking, His rump is filling out again along with his topline.
but enough of the story.. here are pictures of him :) He's a 10 yr old Brown TB Gelding, name Danamite aka Dan . :)
OK Theses two pictures are from his Ad.
Pictures of when he arrived, it kinda shows how thin he is.
All Tacked Up
First time I got to see him lay down/sleep
