2011 Fair Horse Show

Well we just completed the big show of the season where I live. My horse had a mental melt down and we didn't do as well as I had hoped. We're going to try putting her on "regumate" and see if that helps, otherwise we'll consider spaying her. The horse show committee did not hire a photograhper for this years show, what were they thinking or they were not thinking!! So, my friend came down, but was only able to stay for the halter classes. Another lady was there taking pictures during the riding classes, so I'm going to see if she has any good ones of us. But for now here's my mare, Dandy's Lil Jewel - 8yr. Old appendix Quarterhorse mare and me in the halter class. I'm surprised my friend was able to get one of us standing still, my mare would not settle, hence the frown on my face.

You both look great. You look like you are concentrating, not frowning.

csimkunas6 and Alwaysbehind thanks for the compliments. I was ready to pay someone a $1 to take her. A couple of the people I show with thought I had brought a "new" horse to the show instead of the one I'd been showing all year. I told them, "yeah, I'd brought a new horse alright, Dandy's alter ego "Jewels" showed up."

I hate show meltdowns! They make me sad...

Ask your vet about the "marble". I know my vet had mentioned it for my mare, it makes them think they are pregnant and is supposed to do wonders. It would probably be the cheapest route and can be removed should you decide to breed later on...

Beautiful mare! This stuff works pretty well too and it's all natural (raspberry leaves)

Farmpony - yes I talked to my vet about the marble, but there is some concern about, 1-she won't dialate enough to insert it, 2-greater chance of infection, 3-she may sluff it and then we need to re-insert it. I don't really like the idea of surgery and the cost is around $2000, but I really don't see breeding her. She's got okay bloodlines, but nothing outstanding - she's in allbreedpedigree.com under Dandy's Lil Jewel.

Hoof prints in the sand - thanks for the tip about the raspberry leaves, someone also mentioned that you can get a producted called "Rescue" from the health food store and administer 2 eye droppers full and it is also all natural. May be something I need to look into, since my vet indicated that some associations, AQHA/APHA and such, may consider Regumate a non-allowed drug for showing, so I need to check with each show before entering.

In the uk mares are NEVER spayed! Its easy to sort out a mare's hormone issues so why this OUTRAGEOUS practice is deemed ok by you across the water is beyond me!

Buzz, sometimes it is not that easy to sort out hormonal issues; such as in the case of nymphomania, where a mare will show signs of estrus all the time. If the symptoms aren't too severe, things like regumate can help, or even keeping the mare bred can help reduce symptoms. But sometimes it is severe enough to where no other option can help, and only spaying can; (in some instances even a complete spay is not a guarentee). There are other issues that can lead to spaying of a mare too, from constant ovarian cysts, to cancer. It's not unheard of, and certainly not 'outrageous' if the horse that valuable to the owner.

OP, your mare is stunning! I hope you can figure out her 'mare issues' without having to resort to surgery!!! I'm sure she's miserable too, when she feels that way!
