A ground pole sits directly underneath the jump. It's there so the horse can see the base of the jump and judge the distance between it and them.
You can put an ADDITIONAL pole in front of the jump to help with striding, but if you are only trotting (which it looks like) it won't do much, and its' not necessary anyway.
