First horse

I found this picture of my first horse. It was taken in 2000 on the 3rd day of having my youngest daughter home from the hospital. She(Dolly) is a app/ara and was 14yr old @ around 14.3hh and a handful for a new horse owner like myself.
I learned everything I knew about horses back then from her and Sugar the 8 yr old Sorrel mare QH I picked up 2 months later. Sugar was a dead broke trail horse, but Dolly on the other hand was anything but head down and dead broke.

No one wanted to ride her because of her stubborness, but I loved being on her back and we worked good together after I learned a few things about horses.
I'd had her about 2 months when this pic was taken and knowing now what I do I can see several things wrong in that pic..learning can be ugly sometimes, but effective. I can't remember having that much hair 13 yrs ago...lol

Cant believe you would hold a newborn on a horse you even say is not quiet or well behaved

She was not so much dangerous as spirited. The kids could walk out into the pasture with her and sugar and you couldn't lift their feet with a 25ton crane. The kids walked all under their belly, pulled on their tails and sat down and wrapped around their legs as they did us when they were babies and they wouldn't do anything more than watch them do what they did. As soon as the kids crossed the fence back into the yard then they would go back to grazing.
I could hold Dolly still as I did in the pic for short times until we had been riding for a little while, but most of the issue was I had no clue about warming her up properly before saddling her and riding. Thus she had a lot of unspent energy under saddle until about 15 minutes in the saddle.

I admit I was not horse savvy then and thought because I could stay in the saddle on every horse I ever met that I knew what I was doing. I had finished horses that hadn't been ridden in several years as well as break green horses that had never had a saddle on their back. In the 20 or so horses I broke only 3 ever bucked throughout the whole process and even then a beginner would not have left the saddle from the small amount of bucking that took place.

What you interpreted from my type may not have been properly expressed through my type and I'll accept your opinion as an opinion. No hard feelings on my end as I know now what I didn't know then, but would still have done what I did with my kids around the horses even with what I know now only with more caution and attention.
