Standardbreds are raced; they're the trotters. Saddlebreds do not race, and while they have marvelous action, they aren't terribly popular in the dressage ring - they're pleasure showhorses.

I just found out that he is infact a Standardbred, not a Saddlebred. My mistake.

George has only been here for a day and a half and somehow already he found a place in my heart ! He's not an affectionate horse ... I can stand there and pet him down, but he is not amused to say the least. I can see an "emptiness" in his eyes. His eyes tell a story. I feel like I know what he's thinking ... I don't mean to sound weird. When I look in his eyes, I feel like he's wondering what's going to happen to him now, and what he's going to be used for, and he's not sure if he can trust us. I feel a special bond to him, and I want to know everything about him ... and I only HOPE that he will learn to trust me. My friend mentioned some white spots on his legs that look somewhat "odd" ... she said that she supsects it's what they call pinfiring. That is a way of making the poor horses race longer and longer. It is a quick fix to leg problems. I just wonder what all the poor guy has been through.

Good on you for taking him in. At least he has been through the worst and is now in good hands :) Good luck with him and keep us up-dated

There is one principle that should never be abandoned, namely, that the rider must first learn to control himself before he can control his horse. This is the basic, most important principle to be preserved in equitation - Alois Podhajsky
