    Meet Lance!!

Well here is one of the horses I am currently working with, his name is Cold Dawn, he is an OTTB, 16.1hh 6 year old and a huge sweetheart! I have only been working with him for six weeks and have found him to be one of the sanest TB's I have had the pleasure of dealing with.

His story: He was raced (and won) until last October when apparently he decided he didn't want to run anymore - literally he refused to run around the track, would only lope! Since then he has been turned out and had nothing done with him. When I got him six weeks ago he was underweight, and pretty beat up. Now he just has the one cut on his belly that is still healing but other than that he is in absolute perfect shape for a TB (in my books anyway). Funny story on him: His trainer thought he was extremely difficult to handle when he was younger until they had him gelded as a 3yo and found that he had a cord wrapped around his testicles, causing almost constant pain. Once gelded he was a changed man! In remembrance of his troubles his barn name is Lance (in honour of Lance Armstrong, another athlete that had trouble with his boy parts).

He is such a sweet horse, very quite and willing although has a lot of trouble going to the left, thanks to his racing career but we are working on that. I tried to get some pictures of him looking half alive on the ground but he just wants to be loved on and look sleepy.

Yep, he looks totally crazed and unhandleable there, Sarah!

My JJ is the same way. 15.2 h of love mush, with the sweetest personality I've ever encountered in a horse.

If I had known such TBs existed, I would have gotten one long before now. Everybody loves that horse, even my farrier who pulled a face when I told him I'd gotten a TB.

I love Lance's barn name, BTW. I always enjoy puns and word play.

Lovely guy, with a nice, kind, soft eye.

He he, such a wild beast I know - thankyou! He is a sweetie, reliable and honest. He doesn't have the same 'spark' as my mare but he is a nice riding horse regardless.

He (and your JJ) could singlehandedly dispel the stories about 'crazy thoroughbreds' I am sure. I am hoping to school him a little more and find him a nice home, he actually doesn't belong to me, I am somewhat the intermediary but I will sure miss him when he goes! There are so many good TB's off the track that just need a little education for their next job, wish I could take them all in!

And here is one more pic where we managed to get those ears forward and make him look somewhat attentive!

P.S. Sounds strange but I only like to take on horses that have a soft eye, speaks volumes for their personality I swear.

    Awww, I love that picture!

Yep, I notice a horse's eyes right away. If they're soft, kind, and inquisitive, I know the animal most likely has a good heart and lovely disposition.

The first time I saw JJ, his trainer pulled him out of his stall and he promptly cocked one back leg, got comfy, and half closed his eyes. I told her, "My goodness, what a holy terror he is!" We both laughed.

JJ likes nothing more than to be the center of attention. He'll even chase away my grey Arab gelding if he thinks Casper is getting more than his fair share of scritches and love.

I'm sure Lance will find the right home, especially since you're retraining him. JJ was just off the track when I brought him home, although it didn't take long to retrain him. He likes being active, and enjoys his under saddle time. Lance appears to be the same way.

Thankyou Skutterbotch, love your username by the way!

P.S. I just told his owner a couple of weeks ago that I was calling him Lance (and the reason why) and he kinda went quiet.... then laughed so I guess it is OK!
