Talking My mini foaled a GORGEOUS pinto filly!!

Yesterday afternoon, I noticed Lulu, my prego mini, squirted, then opened and closed her vulva about 10 times with her tail lifted. I'd never seen her do that, so I kept a close watch on her for the next hour, then went back inside.

So last night, my mom and I went out to the barn around 11 to check on the horses, and as I was organizing the grooming supplies, Lulu lays down in the shavings. We went inside the stall, and she's breathing heavy. My mom ran inside to get her phone since Lulu had problems last time. As soon as she left, Lulu started spewing tons of yellow-looking water everywhere, got up and went back down several times. Then the sack emerged, I felt the front hooves through it, and I helped her pull it out with each contraction, as the vet instructed us to do last time. Then came the nose, and when it was far enough out I knew it wouldn't go back in, I popped the sack so the foal could breathe, and with each contraction the head came out more and more. That's when my mom came back out....We helped Lulu push the foal's body through, it was breathing when it was half-way out, and then we saw a big white splotch! She was a pinto!

We got her all the way out, cut the ambylical (SP?) cord, and rubbed the shavings off of her with towels. Lulu got up and walked over when the foal was all dry, licked her clean, and tried to help her to stand. It took her (we checked....filly!) only 5 minutes after birth to stand up :). She was walkin' around in no time, figuring out where her legs went.

She still hadn't nursed when the first hour was up. We tried to help her out, but Mama was moving around too much for her to get hold of the teets. After another hour, we gave Lulu grain, and that silenced her. She stayed where she was while the exhausted little filly tried to sleep. We lifted her up, and she started sucking on the teets!

She's gorgeous! Now for the pictures....I know they're bad, they were taken at midnight:

More to be taken this afternoon!

Congrats on the little one. What color was the stud? Do you know what that mare normally throws for colors? Make sure you clean the umbilicus of the little one to help prevent infection, I would also hose down the mare(it was very messy from the looks of it). I'm also a big fan of heat lamps(tho I don't know what the temperature is in your area), but they are also great low lighting even at night. Gives them that extra bonus of having some lighting to not step on each other, and for baby to not bump into things and find where it is he wants to go in the stall.

Congrats again.

Thanks!

The sire was a Sabino I think? We sold him a few weeks ago, he was a registered Welsh type A, but here's a few pics:

This is their second foal together, the first died at birth. We cleaned up the umbilical cord with iodine. It's super hot out here (Ohio) right now, so I don't think a heat lamp would be a good idea....they have plenty of light at night from the barn light outside if I leave the barn door open, so I think they're good. Her coloring astounds me! I didn't think a gray pinto x flaxen chestnut would be able to throw a chestnut pinto, but I guess they do!
