This is Cumani. He is a 4 year old 16.1hh gelding who has come straight off the race track. I have been searching long and hard and something about him just told me to look past any minor faults and take him home :)
He has the manners of a gentleman and I am very impressed. He stands perfectly with his feet, to be tacked up, groomed and even for me to mount. I hopped on yesterday for the first time and he walked bravely around a jumping arena which was all new and full of scary looking obstacles. Leg aids don't exist in his world yet!
However a lot has saddened me with the things I have seen. For instance, he did not know what a carrot what. Most of us presume that all horses eat carrots, but in his world he has never had a carrot. He tried a small piece yesterday and I was close to tears! I have to bite him off small tiny pieces to eat and he is slowly getting the hang of it.
He also does not understand affection. He is not used to the big hugs and love we give our horses when we greet them. Yet with a bit of love and determination he has realised that having his ears rubbed and scratched is nice and now comes over and drops his head for a scratch :)
He spent 2 days in the arena away from the other horses and today has gone out with them and there have been no problems. He really needs to start grazing to assist his ulcers in healing.
I see a good and happy future with this brave and intelligent horse. Im sure once his proper food kicks in and his ulcers start getting better (I have put him on medication for it) he is going to fill out really nicely. We have also dewormed him just in case.
He managed to throw a shoe the first morning from galloping around. The open space really blew his mind! It was just pure glee. Heels were flying! For a horse who has spent 23 hours a day in a stall he is in heaven! So the farrier is coming today to start getting his feet right because he really needs the work.
Im in love :) I really feel like I found the right one so Im going to stop babbling!
