Something I REALLY hate

Alright, this is just something I feel like saying. I have seen this happen a million times on craigslist. I have a FB friend who is suddenly heart broken by the condition of two old geldings at Enumclaw kill pen, and is making daily status updates looking for any free stuff or money she can have so she can rescue the geldings she will apperently give a "forever home" too.

I really can't stand when a so called horse rescue or just some random person, looks for free stuff or hand outs because they want to rescue a horse from an auction or feed lot or something. A lot of the time they always say they have a great place to house a rescue horse but can't afford feed or vet bills...OK, so why in the hell do they think they need to rescue a horse if they can't afford it?? I don't understand it. If you can't afford to give the horse basic care YOU DO NOT DESERVE to get a rescue horse or any horse for that matter. Horses are NOT just a dog or cat, they are an investment and anyone interested in getting ANY horse, should be finicialy prepared to take on an equine.

It's nice that these people want to do good for a horse in poor condition, but I believe that if your going to take on a huge responsiblity such as a rescue horse, you need to be able to finicially support the horse and not rely on handouts and free stuff. Leave it to a real 501 rescue to take of rescue horse if you cannot afford to house, feed, shoe, vet and take care of the horse.

So that was my rant/lecture for the day. Sorry, lol. I just get frustrated with people wanting free stuff to "rescue" a horse. I almost took screen shot's of my FB friend's status and blacked out her name and picture, but I didn't want to risk any sort of "slander" issues. But I'm sure anyone who is on craiglist atleast once a day (like me) has seen ads like this before and knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Horses aren't cheap..

Horses in derelict condition is heartbreaking and in a way it is assuring that someone is willing to devote the time, even without the finances to help these souls. The harsh reality is sometimes these horses need to be there, there is nothing modern veterinary medicine can do for them and we can't turn the clock back on the old skinny horses.

I always want to take all cats with me when I go to local PetSmart and see them sitting there waiting to be adopted. But I can't. I think the responsible owner (whether he has dogs, cats, or horse) should know the limits on number of animals he can afford. Bringing in animals just because "you feel sorry" without having enough resources to care for them is NOT a rescue and down straight irresponsible.

I recently saw this on craigslist. Asking for things like buckets, blankets, halters... fine if someone can give to a good cause.. great.

But it went on to ask for feed, hay or donations for vet/farrier- if you cannot afford feed/hay- do not rescue a horse. You are putting them back into the same situation your trying to save them from. Ugh, some people.

I do not feel that getting a horse from a feed lot or sales barn is rescuing. At those facilities, they ARE on their way some where. Just because folks don't agree with the end result doesn't mean they need to be 'rescued'. The correct term there is 'saved'.

A true rescue is removing them from harms way - abuse or starvation.

My opinion of course.
