5 yr old appendix gelding ** critique please

I am working hard on making this guy an all around mount for 4h/novice aqha. We've still got a long way to go, but we've made some major improvments! Please tell me how he looks, I want to do AQHA for english this year in youth and novice. I can slow down/speed him up any if needed, that's easy haha.
I've been working hard on his western lately because he's a 16.3 hand horse and its hard to get him to use those muscles in his hind when he's so heavy on the front.

I know nothing about AQHA nor about western but I do know English pretty well.

So I'm going to give you a check list for English.

He needs to be much more forward moving especially in that hind.. those hind legs need to reach underneath him. Reins should be shorter so you are connected and he can feel your seat and rein half halts. Depending on the style, your seat and stirrup length will vary. I'm starting Dressage so I deal more with deep seat riding and longer stirrups.

Incorporating half halts would re-balance him and start getting him more on his hind end when paired with transitions, figures (figure eights, circles, serpentines, spiraling in and then out, etc.)

He looks like a fun ride :) Best of luck in your classes!

You have 2 completely different responses now!

I may sound totally ignorant right now, but when I have watched world champion AQHA English classes it looked like it was a western horse with English tack on. (That was NOT an insult or mean.. I wish my horse could do what you guys do). Please excuse my wording for this I have no idea what the proper terms are. The only thing I see is that the lope needs to less “Broken” ( that’s one of those terms ) and more flowing. Your horse looks very heavy when he land on this inside leg. But I think you know that! Other than that I don’t see any big changes. An AQHA show is still for quarter horses and still wants that essence of how a QH goes. I think you guys look great!
