Barrel Horses - Possible Buys

So I've been really leaning back and forth between buying a backup finished horse or a prospect. I could spend less on a prospect and do the training myself, or I could just buy outright, have an adjustment period and then be off and racing....

Well, here's a couple horses I've been looking at. What do you think?

I'm still looking an haven't really sat down and gridded all these guys out, so I figured I'd slap up some links real quick before bed and then get down to business tomorrow and see what you guys say.

I like the third one..only thing is that she seems really jacked up and sometimes that can end bad. She is fast and she is beautiful. I think she would need an experienced rider..which you are...try her out..are planning on buying one soon or just shopping?

What about her

^ I know that horse. I've done HS Equestrian since I was a Freshman so I've seen her run, been considering it, but one of my friends was looking at her too so I wasn't sure if I should step on any toes yet until I know she's not interested.

Right now I'm kinda doing a little of both - I know I'll need a backup horse so I want to buy something solid, but on the other hand I don't expect Bails to break down anytime soon so I don't think getting a prospect would be too far out of the question if I trained myself. It would be more work on my part, but hey, the money saved might be worth it.

I like the roan the most, the palomino is lacking in the hindquarters to me...

I like my horses with a big engine (deep girth), nice round hip and legs that are on the longer side to match. I also like horses that are 15.2-16 hands as well... more speed :)

Also, it depends on how far you want to travel for a cheap well bred prospect :P I know several ranches up here that have some lovely prospects!!

Size isn't important to me.....I have seen a shetland pony go out and run in the 1D on a standard pattern with her little seven year old jockey, and the best barrel horse I ever owned was a 14hh paint.

What's important to me are the strong hindquarters, which is why I'm not too stuck on the palomino like you said. But hey, heart is what I really want to look for...Heart and ability, though in a prospect I would look directly to the conformation and then from there its just what I can feel in my gut when I ride it.

I agree..size shouldn't matter. There is a pony here that ran 14's or less..It was black.

HOOVER THE MOVER!!! Am I right, or am I RIGHT? That pony is SUCH a beast.

Okay, randomly slightly OT, but watching that pony do the keyhole (which it did AMAZINGLY!), I couldn't help but wonder if they adjust the size of the keyhole to the horse...'cuz if Aires did that, we'd need a MUCH bigger circle, even if he could turn on a dime like that! Lol

Aires - Nope, the pattern is the same size and so is the keyhole itself. I know the feeling, my freight train of a horse just blows right through the paint, lol
