    Confo Critique of my mare!

So I really wasn't going to do this, but decided to since I took the photos the other day for my own personal files.

Honey is a 4yr old Standardbred mare. She'll be 5 in Dec. I've had her since August this year, and in March she was sacked from racing. So she lost all her muscles and everything, like any typical horse that was sacked and then spent their time out in a paddock.
I also want to say that here in New Zealand we had one of the roughest winters out. My paddocks didn't cope very well, and although my horses were fed hay and hard feed, they came into Spring quite light. I now have changed their diet and with the grass that's FINALLY coming through, they're gaining weight :) The other thing I want to point out is that she's due for her feet to be trimmed so they are a bit long.

Other info to take into consideration... uh, she's just been backed and started a week ago, and progressing very well! I plan to use her for low level dressage pursuits... and some showing even though she's not going to be every judge's cup of tea! She's a wee honey as he name suggests and I love her to death, so please no nasty comments, thanks!

And just one of her under saddle, cos I'm so proud of her!

    Thanks for taking a look!

    I like her!

Only two things that I'm seeing wrong is her head is huge compared to her body (or at least to me it looks that way) and she's fairly straight backed. Other than that I like her.

She looks soooo calm for an OTSB! The last one I saw in real life looked crazy! She is definitely a looker and I think she'd get the judges attention

I love the last picture of her undersaddle, she has such a cute face with her ears perked like that!

I agree, she does have a very large head, but that is common in standardbreds. Her front cannons seem long in comparison to her forearms, neck hits her shoulders abruptly, straight-backed, and sickle-hocked. She has nice shoulder muscle but seems heavy in front. Hooves look like they need to be done.

Overall, I think she's really cute. A bit of toning and she'll look great!

Thanks guys... she's just started a wee growth spurt (its common for horses by her sire to be late developers... her half brother did most of his growing around 5yrs)... and am hoping she starts to fill out and match up a bit more.
Jubliee, I mentioned she needs her feet trimmed :) They are a bit long. Her farrier actually left a fair amount of toe, and so they've grown quite quickly.
Like I said, she's not going to be everyone's cup of tea... but she's mine and that's all that matters ;)

Actually Sonny, most SBs are very level headed animals... You must have just met an exception :P I've owned SBs for many years now and wouldn't go past the breed. She's just incredibly gentle and quiet... and takes all the new stuff in her stride! My gelding was not nearly as lovely in the beginning (he suffers from anxiety issues) but on a whole I don't think I could trust another horse more than I do him. I do own an exception to the level headed rule - but she's not too bad lol.

I love her head, it is a bit large for her body but I don't think it will look so bad once she builds up some muscle.

She is a touch sickle hawked and toes out in the back and front, which might have been fixed when your farrier came out. She is one of the prettiest SB's I've seen, IMO.

Aww thank you Fehr! I like her big ol head, but agree with some growing up, it hopefully should match up. I noticed the turning out of the toes as well, and had been waiting for that to come up, along with straight back.
Thank you very much! I guess I should put the photos up of my other mare... and get some new ones of my gelding haha.
